Introduction to Word Study: Theory,
Assessment, and Instruction
This
course will
provide an introduction to word study as part of a comprehensive elementary
literacy program. Through reading, reflection, discussion, and application,
participants will gain an understanding of the components of word study, the
developmental stages of spelling, and the sound, pattern, and meaning layers
of English orthography. Participants will be expected to plan for new word
study practices and activities in a class or other instructional setting.
This course will focus on phonemic awareness, phonics, spelling, structural
analysis, and vocabulary development. |

Topics in Education – Writing
Methodology for Secondary Teachers (EDU 6780) This course
explores specific instructional techniques to improve the writing of
secondary students. Teachers work and write together daily and meet in
writing response groups. Each teacher will create and present a demonstration
of a teaching method that has been effective in his or her classroom.
Participants will also read and discuss professional articles and excerpts. |
